Data Source

All recall data displayed on FoodRecallFinder.com is sourced exclusively from the FDA Recall Enterprise System via the openFDA Food Enforcement API. This is a public database maintained by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and made freely available to the public.

We aggregate FDA Enforcement Reports only. Market withdrawals and safety alerts that do not carry an official FDA enforcement classification are not included in our database unless they appear in the openFDA enforcement endpoint.

Our database currently contains 29,033 FDA enforcement records spanning 1,665 brands. Data is refreshed weekly.

The Snapshot Caveat

All data on this site represents a snapshot of public FDA enforcement records as of the last sync date shown in each page footer. FoodRecallFinder.com does not monitor real-time FDA activity. A recall event may have been initiated, updated, or terminated after the last sync date.

Always verify current recall status directly at FDA.gov before making any product safety decisions.

FDA Recall Classifications

All recall classifications are assigned by the FDA, not by FoodRecallFinder.com. We report FDA classifications exactly as they appear in the official enforcement database.

  • Class I — A situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
  • Class II — A situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.
  • Class III — A situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product is not likely to cause any adverse health consequences.

Recall Velocity

Recall velocity is the primary frequency metric displayed on each brand page. It is calculated as:

Recall Velocity = Total FDA recall events ÷ Years active in the FDA database

Years active is calculated as the number of years between a brand’s earliest and most recent recall event in the FDA database. A minimum of 1 year is applied to avoid division errors for brands with a very short history.

This metric normalizes for company age — a brand active for 20 years is compared fairly to one active for 5 years on a per-year basis.

Category Averages and Benchmarks

Each brand is assigned to one of 11 food categories based on the predominant product type in their FDA recall history. Category assignment reflects recall history only and does not represent the brand’s full product range.

Category averages are calculated as the mean recall velocity of all brands assigned to the same category in our database. These averages are used to generate benchmark labels.

Benchmark labels are assigned as follows:

  • Well Below Average — Brand recall velocity is more than 25% below the category average
  • Below Average — Brand recall velocity is 5–25% below the category average
  • Above Average — Brand recall velocity is 5–25% above the category average
  • Well Above Average — Brand recall velocity is more than 25% above the category average

Benchmark labels are neutral descriptors based on mathematical comparison only. They do not constitute a safety rating, recommendation, or editorial judgment of any kind.

Severity Index

The Severity Index displayed on each brand page is calculated as:

Severity Index = Total Class I recalls ÷ Total recalls × 100

This represents the percentage of a brand’s FDA recall history that carries a Class I classification. A higher percentage indicates a greater proportion of life-threatening or serious health risk events in the brand’s historical record.

This metric is mathematical only. It does not constitute a current safety assessment or prediction of future recall activity.

Days Since Last Recall

Days since last recall is calculated as the number of calendar days between the most recent FDA recall initiation date in our database for a given brand and the date of our most recent data sync.

A brand may have experienced recall events between our last sync date and today that are not yet reflected. This metric reflects our database status only, not current FDA regulatory standing.

Current Status Banner

The status banner displayed at the top of each brand page is determined by the following rules, applied uniformly to every brand in our database:

  • No Recent Recalls (green) — No recorded recall activity in the past 365 days as of the last sync date
  • Recall History Recorded (amber) — Recall activity recorded within the past 12 months as of the last sync date
  • Active Recall (red) — An active recall event on record or recall activity within the past 90 days as of the last sync date

Status is based on FDA enforcement records only and does not constitute a safety guarantee. Always verify current status at FDA.gov.

Operational Tiers

Each brand is assigned an operational tier based on recall volume and years of history in the FDA database:

  • Industry Giant — 50 or more total recalls and 15 or more years active in the FDA database
  • Established Player — 15 or more total recalls or 5 or more years active
  • Emerging Brand — Fewer than 15 total recalls and fewer than 5 years active

Operational tiers reflect FDA enforcement history only and do not represent company size, revenue, market share, or any other business metric.

Data Corrections

If you are a company representative and believe our data does not accurately reflect the current status on FDA.gov, please visit our Data Accuracy & Corrections page. We aim to review all correction requests within 5 business days and update our platform to match official FDA records where discrepancies are confirmed.
